Intravenous fluid (serum) is a medical fluid administered intravenously to provide the body with fluids, minerals, and sometimes medication. Its primary purpose is to maintain the body’s fluid balance and correct electrolyte deficiencies. It is most often used for dehydration and fluid loss following surgical procedures. Because it is administered intravenously, it is quickly absorbed by the body and shows its effects in a short time. It also supports the patient’s energy levels and organ functions, thus accelerating the healing process. In addition to preventing fluid loss, serum administration is also preferred in some cases to provide vitamin, glucose, or medication support.
What is Serum Used For, and Why is it Administered?
Serum is administered primarily to maintain the body’s fluid balance and prevent mineral deficiencies. It helps to quickly replenish losses, especially in hospitalized patients, after intense exercise, and due to excessive sweating in hot weather. In some cases, solutions with added vitamins and electrolytes are used to support the immune system. Fluid and mineral supplementation reduces feelings of fatigue, supports the balanced functioning of organs, and accelerates the healing process.
In addition, intravenous fluids (IVF) can be administered to patients who are unconscious, in intensive care, post-operative, or experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhea, and who cannot take fluids or medication orally. IVF is vital for patients experiencing blood loss, shock, severe burns, or infections. Intravenous administration of medications such as antibiotics, chemotherapy, and painkillers, blood sugar regulation, and the urgent correction of acid-base and electrolyte imbalances are also performed via IVF.
How is IVF Administered?
IVF administration must be performed under medical supervision and sterile conditions. The procedure is planned according to the patient’s fluid and electrolyte needs and is administered safely with the correct intravenous access. The patient’s general condition should be continuously monitored during the procedure, as the effectiveness and safety of the solution depend on the careful execution of all steps. The procedure generally consists of the following stages:
Patient Assessment: First, the patient’s fluid needs, electrolyte balance, and health status should be assessed by a physician/nurse. Blood tests may be necessary depending on the situation.
Preparation: A sterile work area should be created, and the necessary equipment and fluid to be used should be prepared. The needle, intravenous access, and sterile gloves should be ready.
Intravenous access selection: Veins in the forearm/back of the hand are generally preferred. After finding a suitable vein, the skin should be cleaned with an antiseptic for sterilization.
Catheter placement: An appropriately sized catheter/needle should be placed into the vein. Care should be taken to ensure the patient does not experience discomfort during placement.
Intravenous catheterization: After the prepared fluid is sterilely intravenous with the set, the drip rate should be monitored. In some cases, it may be necessary to administer it at a constant rate using a pump.
Monitoring during administration: The patient’s blood pressure, pulse, and general condition can be monitored. If any reaction or complication occurs, the procedure should be stopped immediately.
Post-administration care: Once the fluid is finished, the catheter should be removed, and the materials used should be disposed of properly as they fall under the category of medical waste.
